About Kisoro (Gorilla Home town)

Kisoro district in southwestern Uganda stands out as a captivating blend of natural wonders and diverse cultures. Beyond its scenic beauty, it holds historical significance as the site where European explorers established a crucial boundary pillar, shaping the geopolitical landscape of present-day Uganda.

Mount Sabyinyo is a unique geographical landmark where Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo converge. It’s the only such meeting point in Uganda. This significance makes it a cherished symbol of unity and a source of national pride. However, neglecting Mount Sabyinyo could potentially lead to conflict, as it has been historically contested. Three colonial powers (Germany, Britain, and Belgium) once fought for control of the Kisoro region, where Mount Sabyinyo is located. The Berlin Conference of 1884 eventually assigned the area to British rule. The Bafumbira people are indigenous to Kisoro.

The Lost Tribe of the Forest Batwa Experience.

It has been many years since the Batwa (forest pygmies) were forcefully evicted and excluded from their ancestral forest lands.

Believed to be among the first settlers in the area, the Batwa lived side by side with the Mountain Gorillas, showing great reverence to their ‘great’ ape cousins.

Still rich in indigenous knowledge, music and dance, the forgotten tribe of Batwa wonder through civilization whispering of a day when they will surely return to their ancestral lands, stirring up feelings of hope or fantasy.

Mummified Relics at Ichangushu Caves | Lake Mutanda.

The preservation of the dead, especially in Africa is a practice best known among the Egyptian communities however history has it that great men of the land were often preserved in their natural state after passing on.

The tale speaks of continuity and reverence for the dead however a visit of the burial sites is a trip worth planning for.

A boat ride on the scenic lake Mutanda connects you the Punishment Island where unbetrothed girls were abandoned to die after consummation with men of low ranking.

An Island rich with stories. If you listen carefully to the wind, a thousand voices can be heard, all in a cautionary tale.
