Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area Welcomes 113 New Mountain Gorillas Individuals From 2018-2024 | World Gorilla Day 2024:

Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area and the International community have a reason to jubilate having welcomed 113 new gorilla individuals to the habituated gorilla families from 2018 to 2024. World Gorilla Day Celebrations in Uganda held in Buhoma, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park Headquarters under the theme “Celebrating the success of Gorilla Conservation in Uganda” was a fantastic gathering to recognize the communities living around the Gorilla habitat who are the custodians of these rare species, conservationists, researchers, and wildlife enthusiasts for their conservation efforts. The event shed light on the importance of preserving the natural habitat of gorillas and the ongoing efforts to protect these magnificent animals for future generations.

Just a decade ago, mountain gorillas were in critical danger, but thanks to the hard work of many people, they have been moved from critically endangered to just being endangered. This is a significant achievement. The conservation efforts have led to a remarkable increase in the mountain gorilla population, from around 600 individuals to 1,063 as recorded in the 2018 Bwindi census. Furthermore, Bwindi Mgahinga Conservation Area has a reason to jubilate having welcomed 113 gorilla individuals to the habituated mountain gorillas since 2018.

This recovery has sparked renewed global conservation efforts, offering hope for the survival of these majestic creatures. Despite being the only great apes with a growing population, mountain gorillas remain a conservation-dependent species. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a vulnerability to the mountain gorillas due to our shared DNA, mandatory standard operating procedures including wearing face masks, sanitizing, maintaining social distancing, and increasing the viewing distance have successfully protected them. It’s reassuring to note that none of the mountain gorillas contracted Covid-19.
