Full 2-Day Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Kigali to Uganda – Scenic Transfer to Bwindi or Mgahinga

Your safari begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Kigali or Kigali International Airport, depending on your arrival schedule.

Travel through Rwanda’s beautiful countryside, passing rolling hills, cultivated valleys, and rural settlements before reaching the Uganda border. Your driver-guide will assist with the journey and provide practical guidance for the border crossing.

The crossing used will depend on your selected trekking destination. The Cyanika border is convenient for Mgahinga and some southern Bwindi sectors, while Katuna may be suitable for other routes and accommodation locations.

After completing immigration formalities, continue towards your lodge near the designated gorilla trekking sector. The drive offers views of southwestern Uganda’s mountainous landscapes and farming communities.

Upon arrival, check in and enjoy lunch if your schedule allows. Depending on your arrival time and lodge location, you may have an opportunity to take part in an optional cultural visit, a guided nature walk, or a community experience. These activities should be arranged in advance and are subject to availability.

In the evening, enjoy dinner at your lodge and prepare for the following day’s trek. Your guide will confirm the meeting time, transport arrangements, and essential items to carry.

Meals: Lunch and dinner, subject to the selected package and arrival time.
Accommodation: One night at a lodge near your assigned trekking sector.

Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Return to Kigali

Start the day with an early breakfast before transferring to the designated Uganda Wildlife Authority visitor centre. Arrive in time for registration and the mandatory ranger briefing.

Park officials will explain the trekking rules, assess the group, and allocate visitors to an available habituated gorilla family. You will then enter the forest with authorized rangers and trackers.

The trek can take several hours, depending on the gorillas’ location, the terrain, and the pace of the group. Expect uneven trails, steep sections, dense vegetation, and changing weather conditions. Your guide will help you prepare for the physical demands of the experience.

When the gorillas are located, you may spend up to one hour observing them. Watch as adults feed, groom one another, rest, and interact with their young. You may also see a silverback overseeing the family or younger gorillas playing among the vegetation.

Follow all ranger instructions, maintain the required distance, avoid flash photography, and keep noise to a minimum. The rules protect both visitors and gorillas from unnecessary disturbance and disease transmission.

After the trek, return to the starting point and receive your trekking certificate where provided. Enjoy lunch before beginning the return journey to Kigali.

Arrival time depends on the trekking duration, border formalities, road conditions, and your lodge’s location. For this reason, we recommend allowing sufficient time before any onward international flight and arranging an additional night in Kigali if your flight schedule is tight.

Meals: Breakfast and lunch, subject to your selected package.
Accommodation: Not included on the final night unless requested.

Bwindi or Mgahinga: Which Gorilla Trekking Destination Should You Choose?

Uganda offers two national parks for mountain gorilla trekking. Both provide an opportunity to observe habituated gorilla families, but their landscapes, trekking locations, and accommodation options differ.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its ancient montane rainforest and rich biodiversity. Gorilla trekking takes place in four main sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.

Bwindi is a good choice for travellers who want access to several trekking sectors and a broad range of nearby accommodation options. The correct sector should be confirmed before booking because your permit, lodge, and transfer route need to match.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga lies within the Virunga volcanic landscape and offers gorilla trekking amid forested mountain slopes and striking volcanic scenery. It is an excellent option for travellers interested in the wider Virunga conservation landscape or combining gorilla trekking with other local experiences.

Mgahinga has different permit availability and accommodation logistics from Bwindi. We recommend checking availability before choosing your preferred destination.

Which is better? Neither destination is universally better. The most suitable option depends on available permits, your travel dates, accommodation preferences, and the overall route from Kigali.

Your final quotation will depend on the number of travellers, travel dates, trekking destination, and accommodation category.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Prepare for a forest hike in cool, humid, and sometimes wet conditions. We recommend bringing:

  • Waterproof hiking boots with good grip.

  • Long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt.

  • Gardening or hiking gloves for handling vegetation.

  • A lightweight rain jacket.

  • Drinking water and any snacks permitted by the park.

  • A small daypack.

  • Sunscreen and insect repellent.

  • A camera or smartphone with sufficient battery power and storage.

  • Personal medication and any necessary walking support.

A porter can help carry your bag and provide support on difficult sections of the trail. Consider hiring one through the official arrangements at the park.

Gorilla trekking generally requires moderate fitness, and the minimum age is 15 years. If you have mobility concerns or need special assistance, tell us before booking so we can discuss suitable arrangements.

How to Book Your Gorilla Trekking Safari from Kigali

Booking early is important because Uganda limits the number of visitors who can trek each habituated gorilla family each day. Permit availability determines whether your preferred date and trekking sector can be confirmed.

To arrange your safari with Kamere Tours:

  1. Send us your preferred travel date and number of travellers.

  2. Tell us whether you prefer Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, if you have a preference.

  3. Share your Kigali pickup location and any onward flight schedule.

  4. Receive a personalized quotation covering your gorilla permit, transport, accommodation, meals, and any optional activities.

  5. Confirm the itinerary and payment arrangements before travel.

We recommend confirming the gorilla permit and trekking sector before finalizing non-refundable accommodation or flights.
